Thanks for downloading this hack. I am Infinity's End, graphics artist and editor for the Metroid Database. This signifies my first foray into the wonderful world of ROM hacking! What started off as a simple hack of the title screen ended up becoming a full-blown graphics hack that is now before you. I spent countless hours redesigning the sprites of the original Metroid to hopefully match it with a style we are more familiar with in the newer 2D games, specifically Metroid Zero Mission. I hope this will spark some renewed interest in the original title, which - let's face it - just has some very mediocre graphics. I learned a great deal about the inner workings of this game and found that there are MANY unused sprites hidden within the ROM; specifically for Samus. I'm convinced that Samus's run sequence could have looked _WAY_ better than it did originally. It is also possible they wanted to give Samus two different sides from the get go, like what they accomplished in Metroid II on GameBoy. Why these all-important sprites were never programmed into the game or abandoned, we may never know. --HOW TO USE-- Download an IPS Patcher app (such as Lunar IPS: http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/index.html) and apply the patch to a Metroid ROM. You're done! LUA SCRIPT USAGE: The sprite hack also works best with the LUA script for Metroid created by Neill Corlett: http://www.neillcorlett.com/metroidlua/ The script was updated on 2012/05/23 to be compatible with the latest version of version of FCEUX which is 2.1.5. --SO, WHAT'S NEW?-- New Title Screen New Story Screen New Ending Screen and sprites Redrawn Alpha-Numerical Characters Completely remade Samus sprite Completely remade Suitless Samus sprite New palette for Samus (Yellow for Power suit and Orange for Varia) New palette for Suitless Samus (Blonde/Green Hair; Orange outfit for Power suit, Magenta outfit for Varia) Missiles On are depicted by a brighter visor/cannon (light green) for Suited Samus & hair/gun color change (purple) for Suitless Samus Revamped Samus run animation New Chozo Statue & Item Orb New, larger Kraid New, larger Ridley New Mother Brain All other enemy sprites redrawn Items redrawn (missiles, powerups, etc.) Low Health alarm starts at 10 instead of 16 Other minor tile/sprite changes (doors, HUD, etc.) Special Thanks/The End changed during End Credits WHEW!!! Level Design: Other than a few key rooms to enhance challenge and fun, the level design has generally not been altered as I wanted to keep the spirit of the original in-tact. Note: I highly recommend using FCEUX as the emulator of choice for this hack. Be sure to turn on the "Allow more than 8 sprites per scanline" option(located in Config>Video) to reduce flicker. --F.A.Q.-- CAN YOU GIVE ME THE METROID ROM? HOW DO I FIND A METROID ROM? No, and JFGI. CAN I HOST THIS ON MY SITE? Absolutely! Please just give me a heads up via email when you do, though. CAN I HACK YOUR HACK? I don't mind if you do, just be sure to give credit where credit's due. It took quite a bit of time and effort to create this hack, and besides, it's just a respectful thing to do. HOW DO I ACCOMPLISH X TASK OR MAKE THE GAME DO Y? Unfortunately I cannot assist with your own hacking. There are TONS of resources available, I was easily able to find them. You should be able to as well. Romhacking.net and Zophar's Domain are good places to start. For Metroid level design, try Editroid. It's fun and very easy to use. WHAT DOES 'NRG' MEAN? NRG stands for "Neutronic Replenishable Globule" and is Samus's way of collecting precious life energy from enemies. Her weapons can convert living things into these globules for her to collect. ;) --SPECIAL THANKS-- Kejardon - for his amazing programming prowess, his patience, and continued support in helping me make this hack.
